Fact & History

East China University of Science and Technology ( ECUST ) was founded as the first single-subject chemical institute in China in 1952 (formed through the consolidation of the chemical related departments of several famous universities in east China such as Jiaotong University, Aurora University, Utopia University and etc.), the School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering of ECUST has evolved into one of the leading and high-ranking chemistry research institutes in China, offering fully built-up education system and degree programs at undergraduate and postgraduate (including mater and doctoral) levels, as well as post-doctoral workstation.

School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering (SCME) at ECUST was formerly known as School of Chemistry and Pharmacy, which was  established in October 1998 on the basis of the former School of Fine Chemicals and Pharmaceutical Engineering, the Chemistry Department of the School of Science, and the basic chemical teaching section of the Basic Education Institute. After proper arrangement of the subjects and the adjustment of faculties, School of Chemistry and Pharmacy was divided into School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering and School of Pharmacy in March 2006.

The School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering at ECUST is currently comprised of following Departments/Institutes/Centers:

        Department of Chemistry
        Department of Fine Chemicals
        Institute of Fine Chemicals
        Institute of Industrial Catalysis
        Institute of Applied Chemistry
        Analyzing & Testing Center
Experimental & Teaching Center for Chemistry
        Key Laboratory for Advanced Materials

At present, there are more than 230 faculty and staff members (63 full professors and 56 associate professors) in the school, including 2 academician members of Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), 1 chief scientists of National Basic Research 973 Program, 5 chair professors of the Cheungkong Scholars Program, 1 scientist of National Recruitment Program of Global Experts and 6 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China. Besides, a number of renowned scholars and specialist from both domestic and abroad have been invited as honorary and guest professors.

Our school undertakes annually more than 30 national research programs and publishes more than 200 SCI papers and 100 EI papers each year. Currently, there are more than 1400 registered full-time undergraduate students, 600 master degree candidates, 150 engineering master degree candidates, 250 Ph.D candidates as well as 10 post-doctors.
