A vivid lecture for the freshmen of SCME by Prof. Tian He, November 21, 2013

Nov. 21st, Prof. Tian He (Academician of CAS, Dean of School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering) came to the Fengxian Campus and gave a lecture titled "Old Trees New Sprouts: Dyes and High-techs". All present students were inspired and impressed by the witty humourous expressions and vivid illustrations of Prof. Tian, thunderous applauses and laughters erupted from time to time in the lecture venue. "The lecture of Prof. Tian enlightened us to have a better understanding of our majors, inspired our interest in scientific research and directed a clear development for our four-year university study and future careers." stated the students.

Prof. Tian started from the traditional batik process and extended to the analysis of the molecular structures of dye molecules. From the stability of the color of carrots (visual pigment) to the USA U2 High-altitude reconnaissance aircraft (infrared imaging), they all belong to the dye areas. Prof. Tian stated that the luminescent sensing is current research trend which could be applied in early tumor probing, non-destructive detection in military and etc. Through analysis of current development trend of world energy resources, he stated that, the solar energy is the abundant energy which could be utilized in the future. On the basis of transparency, flexibility and portability, future solar cells would be more fashionable and low-cost. Through overcoming the high energy-consuming and high-cost of LCD by organic luminescence, the OLEDs would have a broad market sharing in future computers and mobile phone displays. Another new technology --- Molecular Machines, will find themselves great values in the breakthrough of data storage, nano-materials, bio-mimics as well as photo-catalysis and etc.

During the interaction with the students, Prof. Tian encouraged them to have a active mind, study hard and lay a solid foundation for future challenge in the scientific research frontline. Prof. Tian also raised the concept of "customer chemical engineering" and encouraged the young student to do valuable chemistry research and transfer the chemistry to practical applications. In the finale, Prof. Tian patiently and seriously answered all the questions raised by students and teachers.
