A vivid lecture for the undergraduate of ECUST by Professor Pei Jian, May 14, 2014

    May 14th, In order to improve the quality of undergraduate education quality, creating academic atmosphere, developing students learning interest, invited by Academician Tian He, Professor Pei Jian of Peking University came to the Fengxian Campus and gave a organic chemistry lecture about Amine to the undergraduate and all teachers from organic chemistry teaching and research group. Prof. Yu Jianguo, Tian He, Zhang Wenqing attended the lecture.

    Prof. Pei firstly based on the analysis of the structure of amine, stated the N atom unequal sp3 hybrid. Then he explained profound theories in simple language from properties of organic amine and related chemical reaction, included amine alkali, electronic effect, solvent effect, steric effect and some reaction about amine derivatives, for example, salt reaction, acylation reaction and sulfonation reaction. Prof. Pei combined theory with practice, illustrated some applications of quaternary ammonium salt and quaternary ammonium base as phase transfer catalysis and in industrial and agricultural production. After systematically analyzed various typical reaction of amine derivatives, Prof. Pei mainly focused on the quaternary ammonium Hofmann elimination reaction and gave a detailed analysis of the reaction mechanism, the reaction orientation and application in organic synthesis about it. Prof. Pei particularly pointed out why some case in the current teaching materials which did not conform to the Hofmann elimination orientation was wrong.

    All present students were inspired and impressed by the witty humorous expressions and vivid illustrations of Prof. Pei, thunderous applauses and laughter erupted from time to time in the lecture venue. During the interaction with the students, Prof. Pei encouraged them to have an active mind, study hard and lay a solid foundation for future challenge in the scientific research frontline. In the finale, Prof. Pei patiently and seriously answered all the questions raised by students and teachers.
