Prof. Han Liyuan visited our school

March 3rd, invited by Prof. Tian He (Academician of CAS, Dean of School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering), Professor Han Liyuan (National Distinguished expert of “Thousand Talents Program” ) from Shanghai Jiaotong university visited our university. Professor Han attended the 115th “Famous Teacher Forum” and gave a lecture titled “The Next Generation Of Solar Cells”. Prof. Zhu Weihong hosted the lecture and Prof. Tian He, Hua Jianli, Zhong Xinhua, Xie Yongshu, Zhu Linyong and Chen Yi also attended the lecture.

Prof. Han compared the different materials, device structure characteristics and advantages of dye-sensitized solar cells with heterojunction solar cell and the recent rapid fast-growing perovskite type solar cell in their scientific research development. He figured out that dye-sensitized solar cells becomes a hot spot of solar cells because of its simple fabrication process, low cost, high stability, high efficiency and environmentally friendly. It consists of TiO2 photo-anode, dye, electrolyte and counter electrode. As photovoltaic conversion device, the improvement of efficiency is very important which was also discussed in the lecture. After the lecture, Prof. Han discussed with participants and exchanged opinions.

Professor Han Liyuan was born in 1956, and at present worked as professor, doctoral supervisor and the National Distinguished expert of “Thousand Talents Program” in the School of Material Science and Engineering of Shanghai Jiaotong University. He finished his undergraduate study of applied chemistry in Osaka Prefecture University, in1988. He worked in Dainippon Ink & Chemicals Inc in Japan for three years from 1990 to 1993 and then worked in Sharp for 15 years, mainly responsible for the research of dye-sensitized solar cells. He has profound attainments in improving the efficiency of solar cells and module technology innovation. He has deeply researched the mechanism of electron transport of dye-sensitized solar cells and firstly raised the Battery equivalent circuit model. His research team successfully improved battery photocurrent and reduced the battery’s internal resistance, creating the highest photoelectric conversion efficiency of single cell. The results published in the Journal of Physical Society of Japan (Japanese Journal of Applied Physics Express Letter) in 2006. Based on his excellent research, Professor Han Liyuan was hired to material timber research institutions of Japan in 2008. As the director of the next generation of solar cell center, he was responsible for five research directions ( dye-sensitized , organic thin film, quantum dots, thin-film silicon, compound solar batteries) , and the leader of 40 researchers. June 2011, the research team created a new world record of photoelectric conversion efficiency of single cell (11.4%). In addition, Professor Han Liyuan also made many contributions to state of dye adsorption on titanium oxide, the electron transfer from the dye to the titania and other basic research, as well as to the development of new dyes. Meanwhile he has profound attainments in the organic thin film solar cells, organic semiconductor materials. Based on these studies, Professor Han Liyuan published nearly 100 papers in international journals, and successfully applied for more than 90 patents in Japan and 40 international patents (U.S., Europe, China , Australia). In the field of dye-sensitized solar cells, calculated according to the inventor, the number of his patent application is listed in the first place around the world (according to the annual survey of JPO in 2005).
