Prof. Liu Zhongfan was Appointed as the Honored Professor of ECUST, December 7, 2016

On December 7th, Prof. Liu Zhongfan (Academician of Chinese Academy of Science) was appointed as the Honored Professor of our university. Prof. Liu Changsheng (Vice-President of ECUST), Prof. Tian He (Director of ECUST Academic Committee, Academician of CAS), Prof. Zhu Weihong (Dean of School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering) also attended the ceremony. After the introduction of Prof. Liu Zhongfan by Prof. Tian He, Prof. Liu Changsheng awarded Prof. Liu Zhongfan with the appointment letter of “Honored Professor of East China University of Science and Technology” as well as the University Badge.

In the ceremony, Prof. Liu Changsheng welcomed and acknowledged the joining of Prof. Liu Zhongfan on behalf of ECUST. He stated that, the joining of Prof. Liu Zhongfan will further strengthen the cooperation between ECUST and Peking University, help promote the scientific research development as well as the disciplinary construction of chemistry of our university. Prof. Liu ZHongfan was delighted with the significant progress of our university in recent years and indicated that he will fully support the development of chemistry and other disciplines of ECUST in the future.

After the ceremony, Prof. Liu Zhongfan attended the Famous Teacher Forum and delivered a seminar report titled  Graphene materials: Preparation determining the future. Prof. Liu Zhongfan and his group have made a series of in depth study on the method of preparation of graphene since 2008. They developed a chemical vapor deposition growth method of nano-carbon materials, established a precise control of carbon nanotubes, graphene and other carbon material structure of a series of growth methods, invented the carbon-based catalyst, binary alloy catalyst and other new growth catalysts. The self-assembly theory of organic small molecules was extended to the field of quasi-one-dimensional carbon nanotubes, and a variety of chemical self-assembly methods were also developed. He also pioneered the use of self-assembled monolayers for electrochemistry and pinpoint chemistry which based on scanning probe microscopy. In today's lecture, Prof. Liu Zhongfan briefly introduced the discovery of graphene, principle and performance. Then he focused on its practical application and prospects in the industry, regarding it as a “super new materials”. Prof. Liu Zhongfan combined basic research and technological development so that he evaluated the current problems and opportunities in graphene industry. And he proposed that to seize the strategic opportunity of graphene materials we must be persevering and master the more sophisticated technology, so that graphene materials could be the trump card of new materials in the future. After the lecture, Prof. Liu Zhongfan patiently answered the questions raised by presented teachers and students.

Prof. Liu Zhongfan also visited the Key Laboratory for Advanced Materials. Prof. Tian He made a detailed introduction of the construction, development of the Key Lab and the application for International Union Laboratory.

CV of Prof. Liu Zhongfan:

Liu Zhongfan received his PhD from the University of Tokyo in 1990. After a postdoctoral fellowship at Institute for Molecular Science (IMS), Japan, he became an associate professor (1993), full professor (1993) and Cheung Kong Chair professor (1999) of Peking University. He was elected as the member of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2011. He is now the director of Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology, and Center for Nanochemistry of Peking University. His research interest is focused on low dimensional carbon materials and novel 2D atomic crystals targeting nanoelectronic and energy conversion devices together with the exploration of fundamental phenomena in nanoscale systems.
