Institute of Applied Chemistry

Founded in 1985, Institute of Applied Chemistry is empowered with a group of young academic leaders, consisting of 9 professors, including 5 tutors of postgraduate candidates, 1 chair professor of the Cheungkong Scholars Program and 1 Shanghai Subject Chief Scientist. In the last 5 years, Department of Applied Chemistry undertook 13 programs of National Natural Science Foundation of China, 6 Projects of International Cooperation and Exchanges, 3 Doctoral Fund of Ministry of Education of China and 12 other programs including National Program on Key Basic Research Project. Currently there are more than 280 published papers, including 195 SCI/EI publications. Awarding 3 Progress of Science and Technology, 7 authorized patents and 11 published patents. In order to help students to take their chances in curriculum study and scientific competition, various basic and specialized courses relating to Applied Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Advanced Materials Synthesis and Technology, Fine Chemical Synthesis and Molecular Engineering are offered. Since 2001, over 80 students with master or Ph.D degree completed their education here. Currently, there are more than 72 master and Ph.D candidates as well as 5 post-doctors. There are 5 subordinate laboratories in the department.

Organometallic Chemistry Laboratory: Major relates to a novel group IVB metallocene and non-metallocene catalyst design, synthesis and the selective catalytic of various poly-olefins, oligomerization and isomerization; synthesis of a new post-transition metal compounds for inactive halogenated aromatic carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom coupling reactions and explore aspects of organometallic compounds in the polymerization of olefins in new ways; study new rare earth, alkaline earth metal complex catalysts for catalytic single polarity body controlled polymerization.

Thermodynamics Laboratory: Based on the background of chemical processes, new materials and bio-product development, combined with statistical mechanics, computer simulation and experimental, the determination of molecular microscopic studies on the molecular level molecular structure, intermolecular forces and fluid structure and macroscopic thermodynamic properties, phase equilibria nature and quantitative relationship between transport properties are investigated. It helps the development of equipment for the chemical element research, design and chemical process simulation models, and also provides basic data for amplification. The study of complex multi-scale structure of the material and its evolution process and relationship with macroscopic properties of materials, provides theoretical guidance for the development of functional materials.

Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technology Laboratory: Optical and photonic functional material are materials with information generation, transmission, conversion, testing, storage, modulation, processing and display functions. They are not only the backbone of the modern information society, but also the pilot of information technology revolution. The study of these materials with the characteristic of interdisciplinary is the forefront of contemporary science, and also turns out to be a highly innovative and challenging field. Our research is mainly engaged in the study of synthesis and properties of nonlinear optics and photonic materials; design of  organic/polymer electrolyte (light) luminescence materials, synthesis and study of major basic problems; clean energy-organic solar cell materials research and other preparation and properties of organic/polymer Materials.
