报告摘要:Chirality and the interaction of light with chiral matter have continued to intrigue scientists since the discovery of plane-polarized light by the Dutch physicist and astronomer Christian Huygens at the end of the 17th century. Many important contributions to this field have been made by other Dutch scientists, the most noticeable being the proposition by van 't Hoff (and independently by Le Bel) in 1874 that the phenomenon of optical activity of carbon compounds can be explained by assuming that the chemical bonds between carbon and its neighbors are directed towards the corners of a regular tetrahedron. Over the past years, a great variety of topics in the field of chirality has been studied by chemists and physicists in The Netherlands, including the mathematical relationship between optical rotation dispersion and circular dichroism, the synthesis of optically pure compounds displaying no measurable optical rotation, and the design of molecules that exhibit chirality only in the excited state. In addition to low molecular weight compounds, much attention has also been given to chiral macromolecular architectures, e.g. atropisomeric polymers, i.e. helical polymers of isocyanides, which have been studied by our group. With the advent of supramolecular chemistry, topics like self-assembly and the construction of molecular machines have attracted the interests of scientists worldwide. Fascinating studies in areas such as chiral motor compounds and chiral self-assembled stacks of dyes and other molecules have been carried out by groups in The Netherlands. These and other studies covering the fields of molecular, macromolecular and supramolecular chirality will be highlighted in this lecture.
